Benfica are close to losing head coach José Mourinho, who is expected to return to Real Madrid next season.
RTI Esportes reports that, as a result, ex-Flamengo boss Filipe Luís has climbed the shortlist to become plan B and is now competing with Marco Silva after Ruben Amorim ruled out a return to Portuguese football.
At the start of the process, Filipe Luís was third choice behind Silva, who is currently at Fulham, and Amorim, formerly of Manchester United.
Filipe Luís has been without a club since March, when he left Flamengo. During that period he was also linked with Chelsea, who instead appointed Xabi Alonso, formerly of Real Madrid.
Flamengo are now led by Leonardo Jardim and are focused on upcoming fixtures. They face Palmeiras on Saturday 23 at 21:00 Brasília time at the Maracanã in the 17th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
