Vasco visit Santos at Vila Belmiro under interim Bruno Lazaroni, but focus has shifted to the next head coach after Fernando Diniz’s dismissal. According to PaponaColina, he inherits immediate pressure for results and tactical gaps from early 2026.
The immediate concern is the table. Vasco are winless in the Campeonato Brasileiro and could end the round bottom if beaten. They also trail in the Campeonato Carioca semi-final against Fluminense, so a swift response is needed.
Set pieces are a glaring flaw. Of the nine goals conceded in 11 matches, seven have come from aerial deliveries, an alarming 77 percent. Restoring the form of Cuesta, Lucas Piton and Paulo Henrique will be vital.
The psychological toll is evident. Core figures, including midfielder Nuno Moreira, have felt the strain. The new coach must rebuild belief while sharpening an attack that creates chances but wastes them, as shown against Bahia and Volta Redonda.
Another task is bedding in six signings. Many arrived with Diniz’s backing, so the successor may need fresh roles for players like Brenner, recruited to lead the line but jeered. Managing minutes for Marino Hinestroza and accelerating Cuiabano’s debut are priorities.
With Artur Jorge still favoured by the hierarchy led by Pedrinho, Lazaroni is expected to tweak tactics against Santos. The expectation is of a more reactive Vasco, using the pace of Andrés Gómez and Hinestroza on the break. This transition period will be key to handing the new coach a minimally organised squad for the Brasileirão marathon.
