Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t short when it comes to the old goal catalogue. Football’s greatest goalscorer has shattered records during a career that has spanned more than two decades.
Ronaldo celebrates his 40th birthday today and in tribute we’ve decided to mark the occasion with a look back at his greatest hits. Here are five of the best goals Cristiano Ronaldo has scored.
The finest free-kick in Premier League history? It’s hard to think of many better.
Ronaldo’s evolution from frustrating winger to world-class goalscorer was complete in 2008. He scored 42 goals in all competitions for Manchester United, with this spectacular set-piece against Portsmouth the best of the lot.
Ronaldo ended the campaign as a Premier League and Champions League winner, while clutching the Ballon d’Or for the first time.
The Puskas Award was introduced in 2009, a celebration of the “most beautiful” goal of the calendar year.
Ronaldo was a fitting winner of the inaugural prize, after marking his return to Portugal with a stunner against Porto in the Champions League. A 40-yard blast nearly took the net off at the Estádio do Dragão.
Ronaldo first introduced himself to the wider world with some dancing feet as a teenager at Manchester United. From silky step-overs to trademark chops, Ronaldo bamboozled opposition full-backs.
Though he adapted his game to prioritise efficiency over extravagance, there were still signs of the flamboyant footwork later down the line. This effort against Espanyol was the perfect marriage of Ronaldo old and new.
Ronaldo has cited his audacious overhead kick against Juventus as ‘probably the best’ of a career approaching 1000 goals scored.
The look of disbelief on Zinedine Zidane’s face says it all.
Incredible.
Ronaldo’s amazing athleticism has perhaps never been better demonstrated than this goal against Sampdoria.
Ronaldo rose magnificently to head home in a 2-1 win for Juventus, leaping to a height of 2.56 meters (8.4 foot) to meet Alex Sandro’s cross.
“Ronaldo did something that you see in the NBA,” Sampdoria manager Claudio Ranieri said.
“He was up in the air for an hour and a half. There’s nothing you can say about it, you can only congratulate him and move on.”
