Pep Guardiola bid farewell to Manchester City with a surprise defeat to Aston Villa in his final game in charge of the club on Sunday evening.

Having announced his departure in the week, it was bound to be an emotional one at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon, alongside the exits of John Stones and Bernardo Silva.

After plenty of early dominance, City found the breakthrough after just 20 minutes with a tidy finish from January signing Antoine Semenyo.

Despite a strong first half from the hosts, Villa found themselves level soon after the break with Olly Watkins tapping in from close range.

Play came to a stop as Silva was substituted off the field, getting a guard of honour mid-match from both teams, leaving the Portuguese winger in tears.

Watkins then put the away side in front with a finish past James Trafford, which needed a VAR check to allow the goal after an offside call.

Next it was Stones’ turn to receive a guard of honour from both City and Villa with rapturous applause from the Etihad faithful for the leaving legend.

Hitting the 90-minute mark, Phil Foden smashed the ball into the back of the net, but the would-be equaliser was narrowly ruled out for offside.

Even though ten minutes were added on, City could not level the scores on Guardiola’s swansong as the Europa League-winning visitors were victorious.

Here are five things learned from Manchester City’s last match of the 2025-26 season.

1. Farewell to Pep Guardiola

No words that I could write could even possibly do justice to the impact Pep Guardiola has had on Manchester City and English football in general.

Very much one of a kind, the Catalan has won it all with the team and transformed the way the game is played in the country.

From winning the first-ever Champions League for City and an unprecedented domestic quadruple to a 100-point season, Guardiola has overseen it all.

The sky blue faithful will miss his erratic gestures on the touchline, his sarcasm in the press room and his warmth while representing the club.

A true Premier League great has departed, and Sunday’s frantic final match was a fitting one for the coach to go out on.

2. Goodbye to Stones and Silva

Of course, there will not only be a change in the Manchester City dugout next season but on the pitch as well, as two heroes of the club also departed on Sunday.

John Stones and Bernardo Silva have been there for every step of the way of Pep Guardiola’s trophy-laden period, with both playing pivotal roles over the years.

The 2018/19 title clash with Liverpool instantly springs to mind, which saw Silva running non-stop for 90 minutes and Stones’ goal-line clearance help seal a famous win.

Both players were also vital in the Champions League win in 2023, with the English defender’s new midfield role helping hugely, alongside Silva’s semi-final goals versus Real Madrid.

Stones and Silva will be massively missed next season, both on the pitch and off it, with the pair being great leaders and old heads in the dressing room. Lads, it’s been a pleasure.

3. Erling Haaland wins Premier League Golden Boot

There wasn’t even a spot on Manchester City’s bench against Aston Villa for top scorer Erling Haaland.

This did not hinder his hopes for the 2025/26 Premier League Golden Boot, with 27 goals netted this season, comfortably ahead of Brentford’s Igor Thiago in second.

It is very easy to take what Haaland does for granted, but that should never undermine just what a spectacular specimen the striker really.

With another great campaign in front of goal, admittedly better before the turn of the year, City’s number nine has won his third Golden Boot in just four seasons in England.

To compare, both Thierry Henry and Mohamed Salah hold the record for the most Premier League Golden Boots with four each.

If Haaland continues this form at the Etihad Stadium, you’d imagine it is only a matter of time before the Norwegian surpasses this.

4. Super Semenyo

Moving away from the farewells and Golden Boots for one moment and back to the match itself, we should give a mention to Antonine Semenyo.

Despite the result in Sunday’s clash with Aston Villa, the Ghanaian netted once again in the sky blue of Manchester City.

Since moving to the club from Bournemouth in January, Semenyo has been in great form, scoring 11 in all competitions for his new team.

The winger was on the scoresheet once again with a smart finish, following his sensational winner in the FA Cup final.

No matter what next season holds for City with Pep Guardiola stepping away, Semenyo will be a vital piece of the puzzle for the Catalan’s eventual successor.

5. One eye on next campaign

With so many departures, and despite the FIFA World Cup on the horizon, Manchester City fans will definitely be curious as to what next season holds.

There shouldn’t be too many changes in the squad overall, with Pep Guardiola putting together a young and confident side as one final gift before departing.

Having won two trophies this season while still in transition, the squad features the likes of Abdukodir Khusanov, Nico O’Reilly, Rayan Cherki, and many more.

This is a very strong basis for the Citizens to build on next season, and add to this with the players desperate to snatch the Premier League title off Arsenal.

Rumours are rife that Guardiola’s former assistant, Enzo Maresca, will be his successor at the Etihad Stadium, and City fans will be keeping a keen eye on the Italian’s first transfer window.
