In an unforgettable season for the ÖFB Frauen Bundesliga, the title was won on the very last day, in the very last minute.

For 10 years, the title had been claimed comfortably by SKN St. Pölten. Now, as investment sweeps into the league in the form of SK Sturm Graz, Red Bull Salzburg and 2026/27 newcomers SK Rapid, domination is no longer part of the Austrian football league.

The final day fixture had ample amounts of tension throughout. Both sets of fans, each manager, and the players themselves knew from the offset what was at stake. For St. Pölten, a chance to remain the dominant force in Austria slipped away in the final seconds as they drew 1-1.

For Austria Wien, it was the rare chance to topple a dynasty, which they did in an immense fashion. Forty-year-old head coach Stefan Kenesei has worked at the club for almost seven years, and had the chance to show he was indeed the correct choice as manager. The case would be made that despite the result on the day, he had done this nonetheless.

A game for the ages

The first 90 minutes of the game was expectedly tense and hard-fought. Austria Wien had the better of the clash, pressing the away side into their own half more often than not. The 2,346 fans in attendance have surely witnessed one of the greatest games of football the country of Austria has ever seen.

In perhaps the most insane fashion a league has ever been won, Austria Wien sealed their first title at the last second. Club captain Carina Wenninger scored at the death in the 11th minute of added time. This was shortly after Leila Peneau scored a 98th minute penalty.

St. Pölten thought they had won it through Peneau’s effort. The pitch was invaded by the bench and club staff, only for them to lose the title minutes later. The game ended 1-1, with Austria Wien finishing the season on 62 points and St. Polten in second on 60.

In what will surely be remembered as the best Austrian Bundesliga game in all history, Austria Wien have secured the double. Marking their spectacular season in an appropriate way. They saw themselves to a European cup semi-final for the first time in their history, won the OFB Cup and claimed their first ever league title. What a season it is to be an Austria Wien fan.

How did the 2025/26 ÖFB Frauen Bundesliga finish?

Third place in the league was wrapped up comfortably by SK Sturm Graz. Graz represent further proof of the evolution of the league itself. From next season, Tode Djakovic’s side will be housed in a new multi-million euro facility. Slovenia international Zala Kuštrin finished as Graz’s top goal scorer.

Fourth place were league newcomers Red Bull Salzburg, who replaced FC Bergheim as of this season. Bundesliga manager of the season Dušan Pavlović led his young team not only to the top half of the table, but to a first ever ÖFB Frauen Cup final.

First Vienna and SC Altach finished in fifth and sixth respectively in what will probably be regarded as a slightly disappointing season for both sides. LASK rounded up the league’s best sides, finishing in seventh on 27 points.

Skipping ninth place for now — BW Linz wrapped up what will definitely be regarded in house as a poor season for them on 13 points in eighth place. Meanwhile, SpG Südburgenland finished last.

SpG Südburgenland have some things to celebrate at the end of this season, though. Their talisman, Hungarian forward Lilla Sopos, managed to score 16 goals and provide six assists. However, Sopos has already been confirmed to be joining SK Sturm Graz in the 2026/27 season. Südburgenland will also not face relegation from the league due to a technicality.

The death of one of Austria’s most successful clubs

Let’s get back to talking about ninth place. Legendary Austrian club USV Neulengbach — 12-time league winners and 10-time Austrian Cup winners — have folded as a club. The club has seen some legends represent them over the years. Brazilian Olympic hero Rosana played for Neulengbach from 2005 to 2008. Austrian internationals Jennifer Klein, Birgitt Hufnagl, Melanie Fischer and Nina Burger are also amongst the many talented alumnus of the club over the years.

Founded in 1996, the Lower Austrian side suffered bankruptcy towards the end of the 2025/26 season and couldn’t finish their fixtures. According to local reports, the club owed around €400,000 in loans. It’s a genuine loss for the Austrian football scene. A large part of history in the growth of this successful league can always be attributed to USV Neulengabach and their on field successes.

Who will be promoted to the Frauen Bundesliga?

SKV Wildcats won the Frauen Bundesliga 2, but won’t be promoted to the top division for the 2026/27 season. The club failed in their request for a licence to play in the top flight due to being deemed not ready financially and in terms of facilities by the ÖFB.

Instead, second-placed SK Rapid Wien will be promoted to the upcoming season, having had their licence granted by the league.
