Gonzalo Plata’s strike that sent Ecuador into the World Cup knockout stage was historic for Flamengo, who are now the only Brazilian club with players scoring in each of the last three tournaments.
Globo.com highlights the moment’s significance for the club. In 2026, Plata followed Arrascaeta’s two goals against Ghana in Qatar in 2022, and Paolo Guerrero’s finish for Peru in Russia in 2018, which ended a 32-year wait for a Flamengo player to score at a World Cup.
Leônidas leads Flamengo’s World Cup scoring charts with seven. Zico has five, with Moderato, Sócrates and Arrascaeta on two apiece. Zagallo, Júnior, Guerrero and now Plata have one each.
For Brazil, however, a Flamengo footballer has not scored at a World Cup for more than 40 years. On 16 June 1986 in Mexico, Sócrates opened the scoring in a 4-0 win over Poland at Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara in the last 16. No Flamengo player has scored for Brazil at the tournament since.
Plata is the second Ecuadorian to be called up to a World Cup while at Flamengo. The first was defender Erazo.
