Flamengo’s Group A rivals Cusco were thrashed 8-0 by Alianza Lima on Saturday (18), with Paolo Guerrero on the scoresheet. The Peruvians sit bottom of their Libertadores section.

Guerrero netted the fifth, two minutes into the second half, lifting a delicate finish over the keeper that kissed the post before trickling in. Cusco fielded virtually the same side that lost 2-0 to Flamengo in their group opener, making only two changes. According to Coluna Do Fla, the club are also in a difficult domestic moment.

In the Peruvian league they are 11th of 18 after 10 games, on 13 points from four wins, one draw and five defeats. They meet Flamengo again on 26 May in the final round of the group.

Flamengo’s next Libertadores opponents Estudiantes won 1-0 at Instituto Cordoba away on Saturday (18) in the Argentine league. Estudiantes top Group A of the domestic competition with 27 points from 14 matches.

Independiente Medellín bounced back from Thursday’s (16) heavy loss to Flamengo by winning 1-0 away to Alianza in Colombia on Sunday (19), despite playing a man down from 37 minutes of the first half. They sit 14th in a 20-team table.

After beating Cusco and Medellín, Flamengo lead Group A on six points, with Estudiantes on four, the Colombians on one and the Peruvians yet to register. Flamengo travel to La Plata on 29 April to face the hosts.
