Flamengo arrived in Portugal early on Monday and held their first session at the Cascade Wellness Resort, with most of the squad on the pitch apart from Léo Ortiz.
According to Globo.com, the workout was a light activation after roughly nine hours of travel, featuring physical work, some collective drills and little tactical focus.
Ortiz again worked indoors, continuing rehab from a muscle injury in the back of his right thigh suffered in the win over Coritiba, the last match before the Copa break.
He has not yet trained with the group, but his recovery is on track and there is no need to rush. Flamengo have not set a return date, and there is a chance he will miss Friday’s friendly with River Plate.
Saúl completed only part of the session. He used the break to build fitness and is training with the group while also doing specific work. He had left ankle surgery this season and only returned in April.
With call-ups absent and those two still recovering, Leonardo Jardim can call on several academy players. Nine new faces travelled in addition to Wallace Yan, Dyogo Alves and Evertton Araújo, namely Daniel Thuram, Guilherme Gomes, Daniel Sales, Alan Santos, João Victor, Johnny, Joshua, Lorran and Rayan Lucas.
They will be based near the Estádio Algarve, where River Plate on three July, Lausanne on eight July and Benfica on 11 July await. The squad fly home on 12 July to finish the break at the Ninho do Urubu.
