Flamengo drew 22,730 to the Maracanã on Sunday, their lowest attendance in a year, despite beating Madureira in the Carioca semi-final.
According to Globo.com, it was their smallest gate since 30 January 2025, when 20,455 watched a 2-0 win over Sampaio Corrêa in the Carioca group stage.
The slump has been linked to underwhelming form this season. Supporters booed on Sunday and demanded more from the players.
In 2025, only a designated home game outside Rio drew fewer, 8,368 for the Intercontinental Cup semi-final against Pyramids at Doha’s Ahmad bin Ali Stadium. At the Maracanã, the next lowest that year was 25,814 for a 4-2 win over Botafogo-PB in the Copa do Brasil when Filipe Luís rotated.
There have been smaller gates this year, but only in early Carioca fixtures played by the under-20s. Sunday’s turnout was still below the 24,967 who saw the thrashing of Sampaio Corrêa.
The win over Madureira and a semi-final advantage lifted the mood after half-time and earned a measure of trust for the next Maracanã date. Tickets for Thursday’s Recopa Sudamericana return against Lanús, 21:30, cost R$300 to R$1,500. Despite complaints about prices since last year, more than 55,000 have been sold.
Trailing 1-0 from Argentina, Flamengo must win by at least two goals to lift the trophy. A one-goal win forces extra time then penalties, Lanús take it with a draw or a win.
