Flamengo open their Libertadores campaign at Cusco’s Estadio Garcilaso de la Vega, the site of their biggest altitude win, a 3-0 victory over Cienciano in 2008. The ground sits 3,350 metres above sea level.
Across 18 matches above 2,500 metres, Flamengo have lost half, drawn five and won only four. The one-goal wins were 2-1 at Jorge Wilstermann at 2,560 metres in Cochabamba in 1981, 1-0 at San José at 3,700 metres in Oruro in 2019, and 3-2 at LDU at 2,850 metres in Quito in 2021.
Back in 2008, Cienciano had not lost at home for nine months, and only Bruno’s saves kept it 0-0 at the break.
Eight minutes after the restart, Renato Augusto finished a counter to put Flamengo ahead. The hosts stayed dangerous and drew further stops from the goalkeeper.
Seventeen minutes into the half Bazalar was sent off for a heavy foul on Léo Moura, and Flamengo gained control. The second arrived on 32 minutes through Toró after another break, then deep into added time Juan’s free-kick sealed a 3-0 scoreline.
Flamengo now face city rivals Cusco FC, formerly Real Garcilaso, on Wednesday at 21:30 Brasília time.
