Flamengo have fallen out of the Carioca Group B top four despite recording their first win in the competition, 1-0 over Vasco. According to Coluna Do Fla, results elsewhere on Thursday pushed the champions down to fifth.
Madureira beat Sampaio Corrêa 2-1 at Estádio Conselheiro Galvão to reach six points, while Boavista came from behind to defeat Portuguesa 3-2 in Bacaxá and also moved to six. Both have played three games, one fewer than Flamengo, the current two time state champions.
Group B now reads, Botafogo six points from three games, Boavista six from three, Madureira six from three. Nova Iguaçu have four from two with goal difference two, Flamengo have four from four with goal difference minus three, Maricá three from three.
The competition has two groups of six. The top four in each advance to the quarter finals, while fifth and sixth enter a relegation quadrangular.
Flamengo had planned to use their under 20 side in most fixtures, but after a poor start the senior team made their bow against Vasco. To lift the trophy they would play only four more matches after the first phase, but it would be six if they drop into the relegation stage.
Flamengo face Fluminense at the Maracanã on Sunday 25, kick off 18:00 Brasília time. The match is set to be shown on Globo, GETV on YouTube and Premiere pay per view.
