Flamengo are under heavy internal pressure over poor post-World Cup form, with scrutiny on director José Boto and the medical department, and questions over Leonardo Jardim’s style.

According to Globo.com, two successive draws with São Paulo and Internacional after the World Cup break have widened the gap to Palmeiras in the Brasileirão. They host Vitória at the Maracanã on the ninth.

The squad are still absorbing Jardim’s ideas, a process hindered by nine players spending two months with other coaches at the World Cup. Varela called for a reset, while Danilo urged self-criticism and hard work.

Some inside the club feel much of what worked under Filipe Luís has gone, with less control and greater defensive vulnerability. There is no relationship issue with Jardim, but there is disagreement over his game model and training.

Friction with the medical department centres on delayed recovery timelines, including Pulgar and Léo Ortiz. The unit was rebuilt after president Bap took office in December 2024 amid a row over José Luiz Runco’s comments on De la Cruz, and trust had to be restored.

Boto’s rapport with staff and players has been strained since Filipe Luís was dismissed in March, with complaints over a cold manner and harsh demands. The president explored replacements but kept him, yet a stay into 2027 is considered unlikely.

Flamengo are searching for stability before the Libertadores round of 16, with another early exit seen as catastrophic after the Copa do Brasil elimination.
