Semi-automated offside technology cancelled what could have been Flamengo's winner against São Paulo at the Maracanã on Sunday in the Brasileirão.

According to Globo.com, VAR reviewed the move that ended with Samuel Lino's shot and detected Wallace Yan in an offside position and involved in the play.

The match finished 1-1. Before the disallowed effort, Léo Pereira scored for Flamengo and Calleri replied for São Paulo.

It was the second time the new tool intervened on Sunday, after a Bahia goal against Corinthians was ruled out by centimetres earlier in the day. The system made its debut in this 20th round.

The set-up uses around 30 mobile phones that require power and internet. Genius supplies the technology and also operates in the Premier League, the Mexican league and Belgium. In total, 65 stadiums worldwide have the semi-automated system installed.

The use cuts offside decision time by 33 percent, based on operations in the three leagues already using it. The CBF has outlined failure scenarios, if SAOT stops working there is communication to coaches, captains and the crowd, then officials revert to the manual VAR lines used up to the 19th round. The devices record the whole match in 4k at 100 frames per second, allowing the system to create a digital replica.
