Barcelona’s return from the international break is set to hand Hansi Flick one of his toughest decisions of the season. 

With several key players recovering from injury and younger replacements thriving in their absence, the manager now finds himself dealing with what can only be described as a ‘good problem’ but a complex one nonetheless.

Simply put, the expected returns of Jules Kounde, Alejandro Balde, and Frenkie de Jong significantly strengthen the squad on paper. 

However, their comeback does not guarantee an automatic place in the starting XI. 

In fact, their absence has opened the door for others to step up—and they have done so convincingly.

Replacements are thriving

During this period, players like Ronald Araujo, Joao Cancelo, and Marc Bernal have seized their opportunities. 

More notably, Gerard Martin has emerged as a serious contender in defence, forming a solid partnership with Pau Cubarsi as a left-footed centre-back.

The situation becomes even more intriguing when considering the form of those who were previously undisputed starters. 

Before their injuries, both Kounde and Balde were not at their sharpest level. Now, with competition intensifying, they may find it difficult to walk straight back into the lineup.

The case of Eric Garcia and De Jong

Eric Garcia is another player who has strengthened his case this season. 

Whether deployed in defence or stepping into different roles, he has consistently delivered when called upon. 

However, perhaps the most fascinating battle lies in midfield, where Marc Bernal’s recent emergence has been nothing short of impressive. 

Historically, Frenkie de Jong has been a key figure when fully fit. However, this time, his return comes with a challenge. 

To reclaim his spot, he will need to outperform a Bernal who has completely earned the coach’s trust.
