Flick likely to rest versatile Barcelona star against Celta Vigo after recent injury | OneFootball

Barcelona will be without one of their most consistent defenders this weekend, as Eric Garcia is unlikely to be risked for the trip to Balaidos to face Celta Vigo. 

According to Mundo Deportivo, Hansi Flick has decided not to take any risks with the centre-back after he suffered a broken nose during the dramatic late stages of the Champions League clash against Club Brugge.

The incident occurred deep into stoppage time when Garcia accidentally clashed heads with Romeo Vermant. 

Immediately after the collision, the defender made his condition clear to his teammates and the medical staff. 

“I think he broke my nose,” said Garcia, visibly in pain as he left the pitch in the 94th minute. 

What now for Eric?

Initial medical checks confirmed the injury, and while the final evaluation at the Ciutat Esportiva de Sant Joan Despi will determine his full recovery timeline, early signs suggest that Garcia could be fit enough to feature on the bench.

However, if that happens, he would do so wearing a protective mask. 

Flick, known for his caution in such cases, is unlikely to start the 24-year-old, particularly with a league break coming up right after the match, giving the defender valuable time to recover completely.

Who will step up?

With Garcia unlikely to start, Ronald Araujo and Pau Cubarsi are expected to anchor the defence against Celta. 

Meanwhile, Andreas Christensen remains unavailable as he continues to deal with discomfort in his right calf.

Garcia’s absence will certainly be felt. The Spanish international has been a key part of Hansi Flick’s plans this season, having already played 846 minutes in all competitions. 

Only Pedri, with 850 minutes, has featured more, which is an impressive testament to Garcia’s reliability and importance in the squad.
