Barcelona know there is no margin for error left in Europe.

After a damaging 0-2 defeat in the first leg at the Spotify Camp Nou, Barcelona now face a huge challenge against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final second leg.

But before that decisive night arrives, Hansi Flick must go through a tricky balancing act, managing the Catalan derby against Espanyol while keeping one eye firmly on Europe.

According to SPORT, Flick is already preparing a rotation strategy.

The idea is not to weaken the team for the Espanyol clash, but to carefully distribute minutes and keep key players fresh for what could be the defining game of the season.

What’s the story?

Barcelona’s current position in La Liga gives them some breathing room.

With a seven-point cushion at the top, Flick has the flexibility to avoid overloading his regular starters.

Interestingly, it allows the manager to take controlled risks without completely compromising domestic results.

As part of this approach, several players who have had limited minutes could be handed a starting opportunity in the derby.

In this regard, names like Roony Bardghji, Marc Casado, Alejandro Balde and Ferran Torres are all in contention to feature from the start.

Eyes on Atletico clash

Flick understands that overturning a two-goal deficit away from home will require intensity, precision, and fresh legs, which is why managing fatigue now could make the difference later.

At the same time, the focus will be on the derby, as expected. But internally, everything is being aligned with the Atletico clash in mind.

Beyond selection, Barcelona have also mapped out their logistical approach for the European fixture.

In that regard, the report mentions that the squad will gather in the morning at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper before travelling to Madrid.

Initially, there were considerations about limiting activities at the opposition venue.

However, the final decision is to fully train at the Metropolitano, complying with UEFA requirements and ensuring the players adapt to the conditions ahead of kick-off.
