Sunderland have tied goalkeeper Matty Young to a new long-term contract running to the summer of 2030, the club confirmed.

The 19-year-old has 90 senior appearances and has been Salford City’s number one this season. He is due to start at Wembley on Monday afternoon when they face Notts County in the League Two play-off final.

Director of football Florent Ghisolfi hailed Young’s progress as exceptional and said the next step is set to be a loan at a higher level next season. He outlined an ambition for Sunderland to be the best environment in England for goalkeepers, with a clear pathway, strong competition and development through senior football.

He added that Young’s immediate focus is the final, with the club fully behind him.

Young said he was delighted to commit, calling it a proud moment for him and his Sunderland-supporting family. He felt back-to-back loans had been worthwhile, helping him mature and define his strengths and weaknesses, and he stressed he remains determined to keep progressing.
