Sunderland have signed Belgium international Thomas Meunier on a two-year deal, with Florent Ghisolfi highlighting his leadership, while the defender pointed to the club’s ambition and European stage.
The 34-year-old right-back arrives on a free after leaving Lille and will wear number 12. According to Sunderland Echo, he completed his medical earlier this week and will join Régis Le Bris’ squad in early August after Belgium’s 2026 World Cup campaign.
He has more than 550 senior club appearances and 83 caps, strengthening Sunderland for Premier League and Europa League football. He rose from Belgium’s lower leagues to thrive at Club Brugge, winning the league and cup.
Ghisolfi said Meunier has consistently operated at the top level for major European clubs and Belgium, bringing experience, professionalism and quality in both defence and attack. He is confident the defender’s mentality and character will benefit the squad on and off the pitch.
Meunier said he is excited and honoured to join, adding that the Premier League challenge is one he has long wanted and will be his first taste of the competition. The club’s ambition, its project and desire to keep progressing impressed him, while Europa League football was a major factor as he looks to test himself and compete for trophies.
He hopes to add leadership and know-how, give everything for the club, help team-mates and build a strong bond with supporters, and is eager to get started and play his first match in front of the fans.
