Sunderland have confirmed that 21-year-old winger Timur Tutierov has signed a new contract after his eye-catching role in the 5-1 win at York City. The club said in a statement that the deal rewards his progress, with director of football Florent Ghisolfi praising his attitude.

Included in Régis Le Bris’ first-half XI at the LNER Community Stadium, he scored once and supplied an assist in a convincing pre-season display.

The new deal marks faith in the Ukrainian’s development since joining from Kolos Kovalivka in April 2023. He began 2025-26 strongly with the under-21s, hitting six goals and one assist in seven Premier League 2 games.

Those performances brought a first taste of senior football in England on loan at Exeter City, where he recorded three goals and one assist in 17 League One appearances. He returned to the Academy of Light this summer.

His future had looked uncertain at the end of last season, with suggestions he could depart permanently in a deal similar to Zak Johnson and Harrison Jones. Sunderland’s stance has since shifted, the extension reflecting belief in his long-term potential and praise for his humility, work-rate and appetite to learn. Another loan could be considered to secure minutes, although Europa League and domestic cups may provide chances under Le Bris.
