Niall Huggins is set to leave Sunderland this summer, with the club not expected to take up their option to extend his contract.

Sunderland Echo understands the Black Cats are not currently expected to trigger a further year on his deal. He signed an extension in October 2024 through to summer 2026, which includes a club option for an extra year.

Huggins made one senior outing under Régis Le Bris, playing 45 minutes in the EFL Cup against Huddersfield Town, before joining Wycombe Wanderers on loan.

Across 2025-26 he has played 24 times for Wycombe in all competitions, scoring once with two assists, including 19 League One games, three in the EFL Trophy and two in the EFL Cup.

His anticipated exit comes as Sunderland prepare to publish their retained list within the next week, with planning already under way for a Premier League return and Europa League campaign in 2026-27.

The Wales international has shown pace, versatility and technical quality across both full-back roles when fit. His standout spell came in 2023-24, when he scored his first professional goal in a 2-0 win over Watford at the Stadium of Light, but injuries have limited his impact.
