Sunderland have begun their summer business, with Florent Ghisolfi moving to reinforce the club’s recruitment team. According to Matteo Moretto, Sunderland are bringing in Matteo Serra to focus on player exits and loan management.
Serra would support the director of football through a key window, handling outgoings and loans. Ghisolfi will oversee his work as he leads a revamped department and has said the club expect a quieter summer for incomings.
Serra was most recently head of recruitment at Greek top-flight side PAOK, who finished third last season. He has previously held recruitment roles at Juventus, PSG and Lille.
Outgoings are set to be central to Sunderland’s plans, with several players not in Régis Le Bris’s thinking for next season seeking moves. A number of youngsters are being lined up for loans to secure regular minutes, including striker Ahmed Abdullahi.
Ghisolfi has stressed that stability is the priority this summer. He says managing departures well is key to controlling the wage bill and maintaining a strong position under the Premier League’s new SCR rules.
He believes continuity matters year on year, citing Athletic Bilbao as his model. Last summer required a refresh, and he views this one as more measured, with quality over quantity and any arrival needing to fit Sunderland’s values.
