UEFA, European Football Clubs (EFC) and Real Madrid said in a joint statement that, after months of talks, they had reached an agreement in principle for the good of European club football, recognising sporting merit, long-term sustainability and improved fan experience through technology. The move effectively ends the Super League project, with Madrid the last club still formally on board.
The announcement followed three months of talks, with Barcelona said to have been involved until their formal exit last weekend. The brief communiqué aligned with UEFA and the EFC’s focus on solidarity and the European pyramid, a meritocratic system in which all levels feed one another.
Under the agreement, Super League legal disputes would be resolved once the principles are implemented. It amounts to Madrid conceding defeat on the scheme unveiled in April 2021, despite a December 2023 EU court ruling that found abuse by UEFA and FIFA.
One of A22’s last moves, a claim for around €4,500 million in damages over the aborted launch, would be shelved when the agreed changes are executed. The Super League had increasingly become a fight over indemnities rather than a live competition.
The chapter closes with Madrid returning to the European fold.
