It is fair to say that Florian Thauvin’s (32) move to RC Lens is working out. In his first seven games, he has two goals, but it is the performances, rather than the statistics, that have stood out at the start of the season.
His form has earned him a shock recall to the France squad, six years after his last cap for Les Bleus. He marked his return to the national team set-up in style, netting an acrobatic finish with only his third touch after coming off the bench against Azerbaijan on Friday.
On Sunsay, Thauvin was then Ligue 1 Player of the Month for the month of September. It is quite the end-of-career revival for the former Olympique de Marseille playmaker. However, as he told Téléfoot, things could have worked out very differently this summer.
“Initially, I was going to stay in Italy and sign for Fiorentina. We were in advanced talks,” began Thauvin, who did leave Udinese, but not to join one of their Serie A rivals.
He added, “Then Lens came into the race, and I had a really good feeling with Pierre Sage. It was what I needed. It was a dream to come back to France.”
