For all their historic grandeur and recent dominance, Liverpool have often preferred evolution over revolution. But this summer feels different. The reigning Premier League champions have torn up their usual playbook, opting not for promise but proven brilliance. The £116m signing of Florian Wirtz isn’t just another addition—it’s a declaration.
The German midfielder arrives with a reputation forged not just in the Bundesliga, but in the corridors of Europe’s elite clubs—clubs he rejected in favour of Liverpool. Bayern Munich, Manchester City… these were not idle suitors. Yet Wirtz chose Anfield, and with him, perhaps a new chapter begins.

“I think everyone knows Florian and also here in training he is a really good player,” Ryan Gravenberch told Liverpoolfc.com. “He’s technical and has really good vision, so I am really happy that he is here and I can’t wait for the season to start also to play with him.”
Liverpool’s pre-season tour in Asia will offer fans early glimpses of the new-look midfield under Arne Slot. The Reds are preparing to face AC Milan in Hong Kong on 26 July, but already the buzz around Wirtz is growing.
Training sessions at the AXA Training Centre have been lit up by the 22-year-old’s touch and vision. While friendly fixtures offer a stage, it’s behind closed doors that reputations are quietly confirmed. And according to Gravenberch—who is expected to partner Wirtz in a dynamic midfield three alongside Alexis Mac Allister—that confirmation has come swiftly.
Gravenberch and Wirtz might seem contrasting profiles on paper—one a powerful runner, the other a technical craftsman—but their blend could be the key to unlocking defences that sit deep and frustrate. Liverpool’s occasional struggle to break down low blocks has been well documented. Wirtz, with his eye for angles and disguised passes, may be the long-awaited solution.
It’s not just creativity that the German brings. His intensity and intelligence off the ball make him a natural fit for Slot’s high-energy, structured pressing system. There’s a sense already that Wirtz doesn’t merely enhance Liverpool—he elevates them.
With Mohamed Salah likely on the right and new striker Hugo Ekitike up top, Wirtz will not lack targets in the final third.
If Wirtz continues to show in matches what he’s displaying in training, that record-breaking fee might look like a bargain. And in that case, Liverpool’s rivals should be on alert: the champions aren’t standing still. They’re reloading.
