On paper, Orlando City SC had every reason to expect a win at home against the Houston Dynamo FC. But on the pitch, the Lions lost.

No matter how hard they tried, the Houston Dynamo FC couldn’t have expected a win on the home pitch of Orlando City SC. But they tried anyway and won 1-0.

This was Houston’s fifth game in Orlando, where the Lions had not lost to them in the previous four meetings. The Dynamo were Orlando’s first win in the MLS era. The Lions had gone to Houston and taken three points after the Dynamo goalkeeper’s Own Goal.

That was Orlando City’s first-ever MLS away game in 2015.

But Houston has improved on the road since then. They came into Orlando with a 12-17-9 road record since 2014. They earned more away points in the past two seasons than in any prior campaign since 2013.

Orlando made good on how they matched up with the Dynamo on paper, at least until the 75th minute. The Lions couldn’t get a ball past the Houston backline. The visitors changed goalkeepers in the 66th minute, calling in veteran Jimmy Maurer.

The substitute keeper made three saves after going in goal in his first appearance since 2025. While Orlando nearly matched Houston with 17 shots, those three shots were the Lions’ only ones on target. Maurer fought off a corner delivery while his backline supplied a steady stream of clearances.

The Lions faced 19 shots, six on target. Orlando keeper Maxime Crepeau performed just as admirably as Maurer with four saves. But it was a shot in the 75th minute that got past him. It caused Orlando’s first loss at home to the Dynamo. It's Herrera's first score of the season, resulting in the Dynamo's first clean sheet of 2026.

It also emphasized the vital quality of focus. Orlando matched up closely with Houston on paper. But when focus was needed, the Dynamo found it and used it while the Lions went lacking.

Houston striker Ezequiel Ponce sent a soft, bouncing shot through the busy Orlando box. The ball was blocked by defender Iago Teodoro da Silva Nogueira using his trailing foot.

The block looked like a brilliant, artistic move at first. But then Dynamo midfielder Hector Herrera rushed in. He caught the rebound and bounced the ball perfectly between Crepeau and Nogueira in the 75th minute for the win.

Herrera’s focus at that moment gave Houston its first win over Orlando City SC in an away game. The Lions must get that level of focus and use it consistently. Only then will they return to their winning ways.
