Football has a funny way of reuniting people, and that is exactly what has happened with Danny McNamara and Charlton Athletic.

McNamara has a strong affinity with South East London, having been born in the suburb of Sidcup, while he spent time at Charlton during his youth before enjoying the bulk of his senior career with local club Millwall.

The right-back made 166 appearances for the Lions in all competitions and always played with the passion and aggression required at The Den.

However, the 27-year-old left the club as a free agent earlier this summer and has now signed for rivals Charlton Athletic, which is all the more amusing, considering footage that surfaced at The Valley last term.

Given the geography of the two sides, Charlton and Millwall are considered rivals, with the pair's stadiums just under a seven-mile drive from one another.

However, despite that closeness, the rivalry is overshadowed by the Lions' feelings towards Crystal Palace and West Ham, who they will be facing next season.

Last term, Alex Neil's side travelled to The Valley in mid-September, with the London clubs playing out a 1-1 draw as a late Ra'ees Bangura-Williams goal cancelled out Sonny Carey's opener.

McNamara watched on from the bench that day as he was sidelined following knee surgery, but that did not stop him from being involved in a flashpoint with a Charlton supporter.

Video footage shows an Addicks fan getting out of his seat to launch some verbal abuse towards McNamara, who can be seen telling the man to sit down.

The pair exchanged verbals before stewards arrived on the scene and instructed the supporter to sit back in his seat, which he did reluctantly.

Nathan Jones' side narrowly avoided the drop last season after their promotion from League One, and they will need all hands on deck if they are to achieve the same feat again.

The Addicks' defensive record kept them in the division, but a string of injuries and lack of defensive cover left them exposed at the back end of the campaign.

Charlton now have a host of right-sided defenders on their books as they make moves in the transfer market to bolster Jones' backline, and McNamara will be hoping he can play a key role.

Given the 27-year-old's recent injury record and his age, this is an important move for the defender if he is to prove himself as a reliable right-back.

The Sidcup-born man featured heavily as a substitute over the last two seasons and has not exceeded 16 league appearances since the 2023/24 campaign.

If he can deliver strong, consistent performances, then all should be forgiven between McNamara and the Charlton supporter in question, especially as the player spent time at the club as a youngster.
