Considering the dramatic way that Liam Rosenior’s time at Chelsea ended, with a historic run of defeats, it’s hard to envision that the manager’s time at the club could ever have been a success long-term.

He didn’t have the authority to command the dressing room, meaning that once things started to go against him, players lost belief in their manager, then stopped putting in the effort required to improve the collapsing results.

Chelsea fans have seen that spiral a few times over the years, and there’s no recovering from it once it begins.

Rosenior downfall can be traced to one crazy moment of tinkering

That fatal flaw in Rosenior’s CV meant it was all bound to unravel at some point. But there’s a scenario where the early momentum he had from a good start could have carried things forward for far longer.

While he was getting good results, his squad were still playing for him and still believed in his ideas. The death spiral only began with the crushing defeat to PSG, but a better result in that game could have kept things together for weeks or even months.

A less damaging defeat over two legs would have kept the group’s morale intact, improving their chances in the league games to come. In turn, better results in those matches would have kept the team in the Champions League places, keeping the sense of panic at bay. Off the field issues wouldn’t have come to the surface during the international break, the squad’s belief in their coach would have survived longer.

Ultimately, that PSG collapse hinged on the one Filip Jorgensen error at 2-2. The crazy decision to drop Robert Sanchez for Jorgensen proved to be the tipping point for the whole season falling apart. The butterfly effect from that single decision is vast, and depending on what happens this summer, and financially in the years to come, could yet have further unforeseen consequences.
