Former Gunner Takehiro Tomiyasu has been called up by Japan for the 2026 World Cup, despite a difficult few years with his injury setbacks.

When Arsenal and Takehiro Tomiyasu made the mutual decision to part ways last summer, the defender must have had one eye on the 2026 World Cup.

Tomiyasu’s persistent setbacks in north London were making it difficult for him to build up any momentum, but it was possible another club would give him that opportunity as a free agent. In the end, Ajax picked him up on a short-term contract.

The move seems to have paid dividends, with Japan confirming this week that Tomiyasu is in their final 26-man squad for the World Cup this summer.

Tomiyasu did make it back onto the pitch over the last few months, making seven appearances for Ajax. He probably would have made more if not for a red card in mid-April, but he’s only had a bench role since his return from suspension.

All the same, Japan have put faith in the 27-year-old to perform on the biggest stage, and perhaps that’s no surprise given manager Hajime Moriyasu’s belief in the player.

Before Tomiyasu even had a club, Moriyasu told the media in November: “To answer simply, I think he can make it. If he is in good shape, he will be a candidate to help Japan challenge to win the World Cup in North America.”

Tomiyasu recently spoke out about his frustrations during the latter period of his spell at Arsenal, saying: “I never imagined I would go through such a tough time at Arsenal, because I’ve always taken great care of my body. I’ve probably done more than anyone else.

“My first six months in London were amazing. It was like a dream.

“I can understand if my approach was wrong. Some players don’t get injured even if they party after a match. I didn’t do anything reckless, yet it happened to me. I felt frustrated at that time.

“Eventually, you realize that things happen in life that you can’t control. There’s no point in getting angry about them. Everything goes on.”

As well as Tomiyasu, three Arsenal players have been called up for the World Cup so far, with more to follow in the coming days.
