Former Bayern Munich coach Hermann Gerland has shared his thoughts on Germany’s goalkeeper dilemma, suggesting that Julian Nagelsmann should continue to trust Manuel Neuer instead of Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Gerland, a legendary figure at Bayern who spent more than 25 years on the club’s bench, remains one of the most respected voices in German football.

At 71 years of age, he did not hold back when analysing the national team’s situation, particularly when it comes to leadership between the posts.

Speaking about Neuer, who is now 39 and recently announced his retirement from international football, Gerland was clear with his stance.

“Neuer will play for a few more years. And if Germany wants to achieve something, Nagelsmann has to put the best on. And that’s Manuel Neuer,” he said as quoted by SPORT.

Worry for Ter Stegen

While Gerland highlighted his belief in Neuer, he also addressed the situation of Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The Barcelona goalkeeper has been seen as Neuer’s natural successor for years, but recent events have cast doubt on his immediate future.

Ter Stegen has lost some importance at Barça in recent months and was forced to undergo back surgery, a development that complicates his path to becoming Germany’s first-choice keeper.

At the same time, Gerland took a moment to praise Hansi Flick, the former Bayern manager who now leads Barcelona.

“Hansi was a crack, both professionally and personally. He treated people wonderfully and explained to each player why he didn’t play. He is at the highest level,” he explained.

Gerland even shared a light-hearted anecdote, saying Flick invited him and his wife to visit La Masia in Barcelona

“But I told him that I could pay for it myself. After 55 years on the bench, I have saved a little,” he joked.
