Former Greece international Marios Oikonomou died on Monday morning aged 33 from injuries sustained in a road collision on 23 May.
According to Superdeporte, he was hit by a car that was reversing while he was riding his scooter on a road known for a high accident rate.
He suffered severe head injuries, underwent emergency surgery and remained in intensive care. Doctors performed a decompressive craniectomy to relieve raised intracranial pressure, but he did not recover.
A product of PAS Giannina, Oikonomou played in Italy for Cagliari, Bologna, SPAL, Bari and Sampdoria. He also featured for AEK Athens and Copenhagen, winning the Danish title in 2022.
He won six caps for Greece, mostly in friendlies and including one 2018 World Cup qualifier. Oikonomou retired in 2024 after a season with Panetolikos.
