Emiliano Viviano has assessed the impact of Lautaro Martinez’s latest injury absence on Inter Milan and the title charge, acknowledging the difficulty while backing the Nerazzurri’s other strikers to step up at Como.
The former Italy goalkeeper offered a measured and clear-eyed verdict on Sport Mediaset ahead of Sunday’s fixture.
“The numbers seem fairly logical to me,” Viviano said, via FCInterNews.
“He is the top scorer and the most valuable player in the league, as well as the captain. It is obvious that his absence is a problem.”
However, he was quick to temper the concern.
“It is clear that Inter have other great strikers who can technically compensate,” he added.
Indeed, the distinction Viviano draws is not one of quality but of something harder to quantify.
“He gives something extra in terms of personality and experience in knowing how to play certain matches.”
Therefore, the question tonight is not whether Thuram and Pio Esposito are capable.
But, instead, whether they can replicate that specific leadership quality when it matters most.
Or, alternatively, if other key players, such as Hakan Calhanoglu and Nicolo Barella, can step up in the captain’s absence.
