It was thought that he may continue his playing career and was linked to Wrexham AFC but he decided to retire at his boyhood club.

It has also been reported that Evans may have a future role in coaching and his attitude to young players has been praised by both Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim.

The former United defender was honoured in his home city of Belfast yesterday evening for his services to Northern Irish football. He was given a huge portrait of himself in the green and white of his nation’s colours.

Speaking to BBC Sport NI before Northern Ireland’s 1-0 victory over Iceland, he claimed that he was going to take time before making his next step.

When asked about his future he stated, “I’m not sure yet”.

He added, “I’ll take a bit of time. I don’t feel like I’m in a rush to do anything.”

The former United defender sang the praises of his former international manager Michael O’Neill and claimed, “when you’ve got Michael O’Neill in charge, he gives everyone a little bit of hope.”

He also added that the coach has the experience of guiding a team to a major tournament owing to the job he did in Euro 2016 and could well do the same with his current side.

Evans also spoke on the potential of his former international team and claimed, “I’m excited. Over the next couple of years I think we’ll see them progress together.”

The Belfast native made a total of 645 appearances for club and country, scoring 29 times.
