Former Marseille defender Alvaro Gonzalez announces retirement | OneFootball

Alvaro Gonzalez has retired from football at 36, the defender said in a social media video posted overnight from Friday to Saturday after a final season with Tenerife.

The Spaniard spent three seasons at Marseille between 2019 and 2022. He impressed in his first campaign under André Villas-Boas before a tougher spell followed under Jorge Sampaoli.

He left Marseille for Saudi Arabia in 2022, first joining Al-Nassr then moving to Al-Qashiah.

Gonzalez returned to Spain for what proved his final year with Tenerife in the third tier, making nine appearances.

The message dwelt on total commitment to every shirt, lifelong memories and staying true to the boyhood dream of living from the sport.
