Former Milan midfielder Massimo Ambrosini has defended outgoing sporting director Igli Tare, insisting the Albanian is being made a scapegoat despite bearing less responsibility for the club’s troubles than others within the organisation.

Speaking on Cronache di Spogliatoio, via MilanNews, Ambrosini offered a candid assessment of the crisis engulfing Milan as the season draws to a close.

“Whatever has happened, whether it has been exaggerated or not, something is there,” he said.

“The perception is that something exists. That it has spilled over onto the squad, probably yes. But now thinking that even after the season ends, Milan, in the person of Cardinale, will not take the situation in hand and decide what to do is impossible. He must do it, because in this way they have masked a situation that has been getting progressively worse, and you cannot think of going on like this.”

Ambrosini warns Milan must reach Champions League to afford proper rebuild

On what Milan supporters should hope for, Ambrosini was direct.

“To reach the Champions League, because that would allow the club to reason with €100 million more and it becomes simpler,” he said.

The former midfielder was also clear about who he expects to pay the heaviest price despite being least at fault.

“If I have to think about who will stay with more certainty, I think Igli is the one who for me has the least blame of anyone, but he is the one who will end up paying the most,” Ambrosini said.

“At this moment he is the most likely to be sacrificed, for faults that I consider to be less than all the other components of this situation.”
