Former Real Madrid forward and manager Jorge Valdano recently shared his thoughts on the team’s shocking 2-5 loss to Atletico Madrid.

The Los Blancos were completely outplayed at the Metropolitano, and criticism has come from multiple sides, including inside the club itself.

Valdano, who managed Real Madrid between 1994 and 1996, said on the program Futbol en Movistar+,

“The monster has been revived. The one from when we visited Barcelona or were visited by Barcelona and conceded four goals.”

He added, “It is true that it is a process and that a new coach has arrived.

“He is working hard, and it seemed that things were starting to improve, but the defeat against Atletico Madrid means that the project needs to be reviewed.

“Atletico ended up dominating Real Madrid in a way we had not seen for a long time.”

Lack of intensity and defensive struggles

Valdano also criticised the team’s performance on the pitch, noting the difference in intensity between the two sides.

He said, “Real Madrid did not play with the same intensity as Atletico Madrid. In the first few minutes, Madrid played on the ground and without much rhythm.

“Atletico played very aggressively in the space. Atletico clearly won the game up front. Every cross was a drama, a real drama for Madrid.”

The former player’s analysis points to more than just a bad day at the office. It raises concerns about Real Madrid’s defensive organisation and overall intensity.

Despite having a new coach and a supposedly improving project, this defeat shows there is still work to be done if the team wants to compete at the highest level consistently.
