Robert Lewandowski may have become one of FC Barcelona’s most important strikers in recent years, but his career could have taken a very different path long before he arrived at Camp Nou.

The Polish forward, who is now preparing to begin a new chapter in Major League Soccer, was close to joining Real Madrid during his time at Bayern Munich.

The revelation comes from his former agent, Cezary Kucharski, who explained how the transfer almost became reality.

As quoted by SPORT, Kucharski claimed Lewandowski was prepared to leave Bayern for Madrid shortly after completing his move from Borussia Dortmund in 2014. However, the transfer never happened because his representative believed remaining in Germany would be the better career decision.

Kucharski said:

“Yes, Robert was close to signing a contract with Real Madrid. There were two or three weeks left before his transfer from Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich was announced. Basically, he wanted to terminate his contract with Bayern and go to Real Madrid.”

The decision that shaped his career

The former agent also explained why he opposed the move despite Madrid offering improved financial terms. He said:

“The conditions there were 20% better. This determined that he became Bayern’s main star instead of being number 11 or 12 at Real Madrid.”

Kucharski added:

“The people around him were putting a lot of pressure on him to leave. I thought it was important to keep our word. It is better to be number one at Bayern than number 11 or 12 at Real Madrid.”

He also revealed that Real Madrid continued to monitor Lewandowski’s situation for years, saying:

“Basically, every year Real Madrid asked me what was happening and what the situation with Robert was.”

After years of considering a move to Madrid, Lewandowski instead chose Camp Nou when the opportunity finally came, despite the club facing financial uncertainty and a rebuilding project.

That decision paid off for both sides. Lewandowski became a key figure in Barcelona’s attack, helping the club through an important transitional period while continuing to deliver goals at the highest level.

Looking back now, it is interesting to imagine how different football history might have been.

For Barcelona supporters, the most important chapter was always the one that eventually brought Lewandowski to Blaugrana colours rather than white.
