Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford says England are not far off winning a major trophy as he prepares for his third World Cup finals. He won his 83rd cap in the penultimate pre-tournament friendly as Harry Kane scored the only goal against New Zealand, then made way at half-time for Manchester City’s James Trafford. Crystal Palace’s Dean Henderson is likely to get minutes against Costa Rica in Orlando on Wednesday.
"I think we're not far off. At England we have people constantly winning things regularly. I know, personally, I've not won anything. I'd love to win a lot of things, but my main focus is being a leader around the place and do what I do, use my experience," he told The Mirror.
"There is plenty of leaders here. And I've always said Harry Kane is the captain, but he can't just be leading by himself on the pitch it's got to take others."
Pickford was part of the side that reached the 2018 World Cup semi-final, then lost the Euro 2020 final to Italy. England were beaten 2-1 by Spain in 2024 as Gareth Southgate’s reign ended.
He is certain to be Thomas Tuchel’s first-choice when England open Group L against Croatia next Wednesday night.
