England face Argentina in the World Cup semi-final on Wednesday night, and Jordan Pickford says Dan Burn typifies the mentality driving the Three Lions.
According to Sunderland Echo, the former Sunderland goalkeeper believes the Newcastle United defender has embodied the squad’s attitude since a surprise call-up from head coach Thomas Tuchel last year, travelling to North America clear about his role.
Burn did not play a minute in group games with Croatia, Ghana and Panama or the round-of-32 tie against Noah Sadiki and Arthur Massuaku’s DR Congo, then came on in the round-of-16 to help see off co-hosts Mexico 3-2 at the Azteca Stadium.
He was introduced again in Saturday’s quarter-final with Erling Haaland’s Norway, as England edged a 2-1 win in extra time, finishing with a towering late header that cleared danger and settled any doubt.
Pickford praised Burn’s readiness and bravery, recalling seven or eight headed challenges, dealing with an overhead kick from Jimenez, and seizing his chance. He said the defender’s last clearance against Norway captured both Burn’s character and the squad’s mindset.
