Former West Brom coach Damia Abella joins Fiorentina under World Cup winner Fabio Grosso | OneFootball

Former Albion coach Damia Abella has joined Fiorentina as a technical collaborator, working under head coach Fabio Grosso. The 44-year-old links up with the Serie A club’s staff in Florence.

Abella said in a post that this marks a special stage in his career, thanking Grosso and the club for their trust and saying he arrives excited to commit fully to the project.

He spent more than three-and-a-half years on the coaching staff at Albion after arriving at the end of 2022, early in compatriot Carlos Corberan’s reign. He served as a statistical analyst with responsibilities across departments, including set-pieces, and previously worked at Watford after coming through Barcelona’s academy as a player.

He stayed on after Corberan’s departure in December 2024 and remained for another 18 months under Tony Mowbray, Ryan Mason and Eric Ramsay, as well as during James Morrison’s caretaker spell. Abella also completed his UEFA A Licence, the highest available, before departing this summer.

Grosso, a 2006 World Cup winner with Italy, scored the semi-final winner and the decisive penalty in the final against France. He was appointed this summer, having previously managed Sassuolo and Lyon among others. Fiorentina are two-time Serie A champions and finished 15th in the top flight last season.
