He went on to feature for Coventry and Scunthorpe, extending a lengthy senior career. Returning to Tranmere in 2020, he remained with the club and made 22 outings this season as they secured League Two survival.

Murphy said it was time to step away, spend time with his family and consider his next chapter. He noted he had enjoyed roughly three times the average career length and was content with his longevity.

Reflecting on his journey, he said he had made memories and friends, played at the highest level for club and country, and amassed plenty of games. He added he would now take stock of what he has achieved.
