FC Bayern are facing the decisive Champions League clash against Real Madrid – but in addition to the sporting challenge, the record champions are facing another problem: the yellow card situation. Four key players will go into the second leg with yellow cards and could be suspended for a possible semi-final if they receive another caution

Manuel Neuer, Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah and Konrad Laimer, of all people, are key players in defence, which could become a real problem in a potential clash against Paris Saint-Germain or Liverpool FC

Kompany criticizes UEFA regulations

Vincent Kompany was less than enthusiastic about the current rule at the press conference. Three yellow cards automatically result in a ban in the Champions League – for the Bayern coach, this is hardly comprehensible, especially in the new format with more games

„I find it very difficult to get through this Champions League round without a ban,“ explained the Belgian. The rule is particularly problematic for defensive players: „If you get this far as a central defender and only get three yellow cards, then you’ve actually done a good job – and yet you can still be banned for the semi-final.“

His conclusion is clear: „This logic is too harsh for the punishment.“

Despite the threat of suspensions, the team does not want to be paralyzed by the situation, with captain Manuel Neuer emphasizing that while the risk of yellow cards is present, it should not play a role in the style of play

„It’s always a little bit in the back of our minds, but at the end of the day, what really counts is winning this game,“ the 40-year-old clarified, adding that players with a previous injury had already been on the pitch in the first leg – without any negative effects

Nevertheless, everyone involved is aware that discipline is required and that unnecessary fouls must be avoided without sacrificing aggression and tenacity

Semi-final with risk

The explosive nature of the situation is obvious: should FC Bayern make it to the semi-finals, the worst-case scenario is that several key players could be missing – and at the crucial stage of the season of all times

The yellow cards will only be cleared after the semi-final, meaning that only players who have been sent off will face a ban for the final

For Kompany and his team, this means finding a balance: full intensity against Real Madrid – but with the necessary control, because in the battle for Europe’s crown, not only a goal but also a yellow card can make the difference in the end.
