Sunderland return to action against Roberto De Zerbi’s Spurs on Sunday after a three-week break. Régis Le Bris faces key selection calls for the Stadium of Light clash.

The injury picture will shape his choices, with an update due at his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon. According to Sunderland Echo, here is an early look at how the XI and bench could shape up as they seek three crucial points.

GK Robin Roefs: His hamstring issue was initially deemed minor a month ago, so the break since the derby should hopefully allow a return. Melker Ellborg has deputised well under pressure.

RB Nordi Mukiele: He was back on the bench for the Tyne-Wear derby and Sunderland were cautious. After three weeks of recovery and training he could play a bigger part and is hard to leave out when fit, though Geertruida and Hume offer strong alternatives.

CB Luke O’Nien: Sunderland will hope Dan Ballard is over his hamstring issue after about a month since the Brighton game, but Mukiele’s return means there is no need to rush. Le Bris could use Mukiele centrally, yet there is a strong case to persist with O’Nien after his excellent second half at Newcastle.

CB Omar Alderete: He has bounced back from a slight dip around the turn of the year with top-class recent displays. The centre-back has been influential during a demanding injury spell for the squad.
