Even before the semi-finals are played, the World Cup has already secured another historic milestone: the tournament will once again feature this stage with four national teams that have previously lifted the trophy.
With Switzerland's elimination to Argentina in the quarter-finals, only world champions remain in the race for the title, something that had not happened since the 1990 World Cup in Italy.
At that time, Germany, Argentina, England, and hosts Italy reached the final four, with the Germans going on to lift the trophy that time. Since then, every edition has had at least one team without a world title among the semi-finalists.
This will, in fact, be only the third time the semi-finals have brought together exclusively world champions. The same scenario also occurred in 1970, with Brazil, Italy, West Germany and Uruguay, when the Brazilian national team won their third title.
The semi-final match-ups pit France against Spain, while Argentina and England battle for the other place in the final.
