France missed the chance to secure early qualification for the 2026 World Cup after being held 2-2 by Iceland in Reykjavik on Monday.
Les Bleus started brightly, and Christopher Nkunku went close within the opening minutes, only for his effort at the far post to be saved by Iceland keeper Ólafsson.
Despite dominating possession early, France struggled to create clear-cut chances, and Iceland gradually grew into the game.
The hosts struck first against the run of play. Following afree-kick, defender Victor Pálsson pounced on a scramble in the box to poke the ball home, leaving France chasing the game.
The French side levelled midway through the second half thanks to Nkunku’s fine individual effort. Picking up the ball on the left, he cut inside and curled a precise finish into the bottom corner.
Shortly after, Jean-Philippe Mateta struck for his first international goal, tapping in Maghnes Akliouche’s low cross to give France the lead.
Iceland, however, were far from finished. Kristian Hlynsson capitalised on a counter-attack in the 70th minute, finishing neatly past Mike Maignan to secure a share of the points.
The draw leaves France top of Group D on 10 points, three ahead of second-placed Ukraine, who beat Azerbaijan 2-1.
