France have appealed to FIFA to rescind Michael Olise’s (24) yellow card against Paraguay, Les Bleus’ assistant manager Guy Stéphan has confirmed. The Bayern Munich attacking midfielder entered Ilgiz Tantashev’s books in the dying minutes of France’s slender 1-0 win on Saturday after an apparent scuffle with Paraguay’s Matias Galarza.

However, replays showed that Olise only held Galarza’s shirt when the latter went to the ground as if being hit in the face. Olise’s yellow card was one of the Uzbek referee’s many baffling decisions that night. The official has been handed a rare 1/10 rating in France’s sports daily L’Equipe.

Olise’s yellow card currently means that, should he were to be booked during France’s World Cup quarter-final against Morocco, he’ll be handed an automatic one-match ban and miss a potential World Cup semi-final. Given Olise’s form and influence for Les Bleus in America, it would be a bitter blow for France and Didier Deschamps.

France have therefore made their move in trying to rescind Olise’s yellow card. Quizzed on the matter during Monday’s press conference, Stéphan confirmed that this process was “ongoing“.
