France’s players secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup by beating Ukraine 4-0 on 13 November, then had their match bonus doubled, according to L'Équipe.
The request, made by captain Kylian Mbappé in the Parc des Princes dressing room, was accepted by FFF president Philippe Diallo within minutes.
Each player usually receives a little over 21,000 euros per match in image-rights payments linked to commercial work with partners. The uplift took that to about 42,000 euros per head for the 23-man squad, while the coaching staff collectively count for roughly three shares. The extra cost came to around 550,000 euros.
An additional allocation is to be added for the wider backroom staff, at Mbappé’s request, including managers and others.
Such a double bonus for qualifying is unusual. In a typical season of about 10 matches, France players can earn roughly 210,000 euros in these payments, sums some donate to associations.
At finals they augment that with 30% of FIFA prize money at World Cups or UEFA funds at Euros, on top of their per-match image rights.
Not everyone inside the federation welcomed the top-up, with some arguing World Cup qualification has become routine, especially from such an easy group. The FFF’s finances have also been tightened by support for the professional game and by the France-Israel fixture, which temporarily hit the accounts.
Diallo has defended the gesture by pointing to revenues the players help generate from sponsors, TV rights and Nike, which will offer a record deal worth more than 100 million euros a year.
