France go into their World Cup 2026 quarter-final against Morocco with one clear issue to resolve, Aurelien Tchouameni’s fitness. Everything else looks straightforward. Didier Deschamps has a settled side, a proven match-winner in Kylian Mbappe and a team that knows how to manage knockout football, even when it gets ugly.
Tchouameni has been pushing to return after suffering a groin injury in training following the round-of-32 win over Sweden. The Real Madrid midfielder missed the 1-0 last-16 victory over Paraguay, a game settled by Mbappe’s penalty and defined more by tension than fluency. France got through, which is what matters at this stage.
Deschamps was cautious when discussing the midfielder before the trip to Boston. “I don’t have all the information yet,” Deschamps said when asked about the player’s fitness on Wednesday. “Aurelien is better, but I left early this morning. He’s the only one who needs to be seen, but he’s doing better. He might participate in the training session today. All other players are available.”

That tells you enough. Tchouameni has a chance, but no certainty. If he does not make it, Manu Kone should continue alongside Adrien Rabiot in the double pivot. That pairing did the job against Paraguay and Deschamps is not a coach given to unnecessary gambles in knockout ties.
The likely France team remains close to the one that started the last round. Mike Maignan should stay in goal behind a defence of Jules Kounde, Dayot Upamecano, William Saliba and Lucas Digne. Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise are expected to keep their places, with Mbappe leading the line.
The other point of interest is on the left of attack. Bradley Barcola had looked to have made the position his own, but Desire Doue is now being tipped to come in. If that happens, it would be one of the few genuine selection calls in a team that has otherwise become predictable, and predictability in tournament football is usually a good sign.
France also have to manage the discipline issue. Olise, Kone and Barcola are all one booking away from a semi-final suspension. At this stage, that matters. The expanded tournament has left yellow-card pressure hanging over key players longer than usual, and it can shape decisions in midfield and wide areas.
France remain favourites against Morocco. They have more depth, more individual quality and more experience in these moments. The one serious question is whether Tchouameni is ready. If he is, France look stronger. If not, they still have enough to expect a place in the final four.
