Spain beat France 2-0 on Tuesday in the World Cup semi-finals, leaving Didier Deschamps’s side blunt and exposed. According to L'Équipe, Lucas Digne’s penalty concession and a subdued Michael Olise epitomised the shortcomings.
Digne miscued a header then fouled Lamine Yamal, yielding a spot-kick that Mikel Oyarzabal converted on 22 minutes. Mike Maignan had little to do otherwise. William Saliba went off on 30 minutes, Maxence Lacroix coming on.
After the break Spain tightened their grip. Pedro Porro doubled the lead on 58 minutes after a slick one-two with Dani Olmo. Deschamps replaced Bradley Barcola with Désiré Doué on 57 minutes, then withdrew Digne and Olise for Theo Hernandez and Rayan Cherki on 72 minutes.
Jules Koundé and Dayot Upamecano battled but France’s midfield offered little thrust, with Aurélien Tchouaméni unable to influence. Ousmane Dembélé struggled despite two shots on target, and Kylian Mbappé often cut a lonely figure, forcing efforts that failed to land.
Unai Simón was assured, Aymeric Laporte authoritative, and the Rodri and Fabián Ruiz axis controlled the middle. Yamal won the penalty and Olmo’s craft underpinned a composed display. Luis de la Fuente kept the same starting line-up as against Belgium and his side never looked in danger.
