France overcame Senegal 3–1 in their World Cup Group I opener despite the Lions of Teranga creating the better first-half chances. Kylian Mbappé scored twice and Bradley Barcola added another as Les Bleus' quality told after the break. GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from France v Senegal.
Michael Olise was the creative architect behind France's victory, providing both assists for Kylian Mbappé's goals. The winger's incisive through balls at 66' and 90+6' exploited space behind Senegal's defence with precision, threading passes that turned the match in France's favour after a frustrating first half for Les Bleus.
Beyond his assists, Olise created France's first genuine opening of the second half. At 53', he beat Kalidou Koulibaly with a dribble inside the box before forcing Edouard Mendy into an exceptional one-on-one save. His movement between the lines and willingness to cut inside from the right created constant problems for Senegal's defence.
Olise's partnership with Mbappé ultimately decided the contest. His first through ball broke the deadlock after sustained French pressure, and his second in stoppage time came moments after Ibrahim Mbaye's consolation had threatened a nervy finish. France's victory owed much to his vision and execution throughout the second half.
Kylian Mbappé ended the night with two goals despite an uncharacteristically poor first-half performance marked by basic technical errors. The France captain found his rhythm after the break, finishing clinically at 66' from Michael Olise's through ball and then sealing the victory with a right-footed strike in the 96th minute.
His opener came from perfectly timing a run onto Olise's pass, controlling his finish past Mendy with his right foot inside the box. Earlier, at 57', he had been denied by a brilliant Mendy save from close range. His persistence eventually paid dividends when the breakthrough arrived nine minutes later.
When Ibrahim Mbaye pulled one back for Senegal at 90+5', Mbappé responded immediately. Just a minute later, a loose ball fell to him at the edge of the box after Olise's dribble broke down, and he struck a right-footed shot into the net to restore France's two-goal cushion and complete the 3–1 win.
Ismaïla Sarr's failure to convert presentable opportunities proved costly as Senegal let slip a dominant first-half performance. The forward missed the clearest chance of the opening 45 minutes, volleying over from close range after Sadio Mané's cutback left him unmarked in the centre of the box.
That glaring miss came at the end of a half where Sarr had already wasted openings. At 9', his shot inside the area was blocked by Dayot Upamecano. Then at 31', he fired wide from the edge of the box when better positioned. The pattern of profligacy undermined Senegal's pressure.
Sarr was substituted in the 75th minute having failed to capitalise when Senegal needed clinical finishing most. His wastefulness meant the Lions of Teranga entered half-time level at 0–0 rather than ahead. When France's superior quality emerged after the break, Senegal had already squandered the opportunities that could have changed the trajectory.
