Francisco Benítez, a prominent opponent of Rui Costa, has condemned Benfica’s situation as unsustainable and said the club are already behind rivals in preparing for next season, in a post on X.
According to Glorioso 1904, the former presidential candidate described total uncertainty over 2026/27, citing a succession of reports not denied about set asking prices for squad players, captains stalling on renewals and rising talents considering moves.
He said a sweeping rebuild feels inevitable and claimed Benfica lack a head coach and a defined structure to plan and support the campaign.
Benítez also referenced José Mourinho, saying it is treated elsewhere as a certainty that he will join another club, yet he spent the week at Seixal and even watched an under-23 match, despite reports he was bound for Real Madrid, a signal he said nobody understands.
He concluded that Benfica’s 25/26 season is already over, that the club are effectively in 2026/27, and that the costly mistakes of the past seem to be repeating, which he called frightening.
